Orange Slices
Carnival in Ivrea is famous for its battle of the oranges. But what happens to the oranges once carnival is over? Italiaplease has a tasty idea
At the beginning of the 19th century, during the Napoleonic reign, the authorities in Ivrea, concerned at the amount of fighting that occurred between the different areas of the town during Carnival, decided to ban Carnival celebrations in the separate parts of town. They organised one central celebration for the whole town which was co-ordinated by a figure specially appointed by the French authorities the general of the carnival.
The result has made Ivrea carnival famous to this day: the battle of the oranges. The battle takes place between orange-throwers on the ground, who represent the revolutionaries, and orange-throwers who move through the town on horse-drawn carts, a reminder of the ruling classes of the time. Protective wiring is put up for the public although their safety is not guaranteed unless they wear a special red cap, not unlike the headwear used during the French revolution. Anyone foolhardy enough to venture out without their hat is a fair target for the orange-throwers all under the generals orders of course.
However once carnival is over there is a huge orange mountain left to rot in Ivrea. ItaliaPlease has the answer. Lets make the mountain in mouth-watering orange slices.
Oranges are used both in sweet and savoury dishes. The best oranges traditionally come from Sicily.
We recommend you use Sicilian oranges for these delicious pastries.
