Skiing by moonlight

by Marcello Parmeggiani last modified 2008-06-20 15:10

The festive season give skiers time to head for their belovedslopes. And what better way to celebrate a white Christmas than moonlight ski? Here are some of our suggestions for your very own midnight run.

There is a lengthy list of floodlit ski runs where you can swoosh your nights away. Here are five of our favourites in the Dolomites:

Skiing by moonlight-
Plan de Corones in San Vigilio: Pedagà run
- Valle Isarco in Racines: Blosegg run;
- Rosengarten-Latemar in Obereggen: Oberholz run;
- Val Senales/Maso Corto: Glocken run;
- Alta Badia: in Corvara, Abrusè run and in San Cassiano, Piz Sorega run.

For more traditional ski runs you can't do much better than this list.

Tired of being in the spotlight? Take a break by watching the professionals, you can even join them if you feel up to it.

Go to Plan de Corones from January 23rd to 27th 2002 for the Biathlon World Cup in Anterselva.
At the same time in Alta Pusteria you can catch the 25thDobbiaco-Cortina International Cross-country Skiing Competition. The competition route covers 42 breathtaking km of the Dolomites railway. The race starts in Dobbiaco and goes up to Cimabanche Pass before finishing in the centre of Cortina.
Then it's off to Plan de Corones on February 17th 2002 for the 19th Val Casies International Cross-country Competition. Over 2,500 skiers from 27 different countries line up against the world and Olympic champions over two distances: 28 km (sprint) and 42 km (classic).

But as we hop between races and night-time runs one problem still remains: what is there to do during the day?
Throughout the province of Bolzano there is a wide choice of Christmas markets where you can while away your daylight hours.

In Bolzano head for Piazza Walther in the centre of town where eighty exhibitors show off their wares. At the Christkindlmarkt you'll find the best of Alto-Adige's crafts, from sculptures to mouth-watering cakes and wooden toys. An ideal opportunity to finish your Christmas shopping. Tired? Relax with a romantic sightseeing tour in horse-drawn cart.

Those of you lucky enough to be in Bressanone will undoubtedly notice the tantalising smell of mulled wine, cinnamon and cakes that seems to pervade the town. Our advice? Don't try to resist and make your way to the nearest bar, restaurant or pastry shop. You can then take a trip to the Christmas Market in Piazza Duomo where you'll find presents for young and old alike.

Merano's
market specialises in wooden sculptures and afternoon visitors (around 17.00) will have the added pleasure of musical entertainment.
